5,568 MUKULA LOGS MISSING, 2025 AUDITOR GENERALS REPORT REVEALS

By Niza Vomo

The auditor general’s report for the financial year ended 2025 has revealed that only 27 of 5,595 confiscated Mukula logs could be physically verified at the facilities under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, leaving 5,568 logs unaccounted for.

The Acting Auditor General, Patricia Malaila, says a status report availed by the Mpika District Forestry Office revealed that 5,595 Mukula logs were confiscated between 2021 and 2025.

However, a physical inspection conducted in May 2026 revealed that only twenty-seven (27) logs were accounted for leaving a balance of 5,568 whose cost could not be ascertained or unaccounted for.

The 2025 Auditor General’s report also shows that the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation had not secured title deeds for 663 Government properties, exposing public assets to potential loss and encroachment.

Ms. Malaila says the audit identified weaknesses in safeguarding public assets across government institutions.

She has urged controlling officers to strengthen internal controls and ensure public resources are properly managed.

The Acting Auditor General has further called for timely corrective action and greater accountability to prevent the loss and misuse of public assets.
