A MISSED OPPORTUNITY FOR PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TO ADDRESS POLITICAL GRIEVANCES AHEAD OF ZAMBIA’S 62ND INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

I could be wrong in my assessment, but I believe that the eve of Zambia’s 62nd Independence Anniversary presented President Hakainde Hichilema with a valuable opportunity to address some of the longstanding political grievances facing our nation.

While the decision to pardon some prisoners ahead of the Independence Day celebrations is a commendable gesture of goodwill, I believe the occasion could have been used to send an even more powerful message of national reconciliation, unity and political tolerance.

In particular, the President could have considered extending clemency to those convicted of politically related offences, where legally appropriate, while also taking steps to address concerns surrounding political detentions through the proper legal processes.

Such an initiative would have demonstrated a willingness to rise above political differences, encourage dialogue and begin rebuilding trust across the political divide.

True statesmanship is not merely demonstrated through the exercise of power, but through the wisdom, compassion and courage to use that power to unite a divided nation.

Independence Day should be more than a celebration of our freedom from colonial rule. It should also serve as a moment of national reflection on the democratic values, fundamental freedoms and principles of justice upon which our Republic was founded.

In my view, this was an opportunity for President Hichilema to extend an olive branch, promote political healing and reaffirm his commitment to national unity.

After all, the true spirit of independence is not simply about celebrating the freedom we gained 62 years ago, but also about safeguarding the freedoms, dignity and rights of every Zambian today.

National unity cannot be built on political divisions. It must be nurtured through justice, reconciliation, mutual respect and a genuine commitment to the freedoms of all citizens.

  1. You are wrong again Mr. Msoni. Politicians are not a special people. They must be subjected to the same weight of the low as everybody else.

In Zambia politicians seem to regard themselves as above the law. Just look at the case of Mr. Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda, a man who urinated ates in another man’s mouth (which normal humanbeing can do that to a fellow humanbeing?). When the long arm of the law caught up with him, there was an uproar in the political circles. This.is Amanda who was a fugitive from the law and who was advocating for the killing of the President.

The polical environment in Zambia is disgusting. The values of the opposition are shocking.
