The Private Schools Association of Zambia has disclosed that about 40% of private schools in the country have failed to sustain themselves while others have completely shut down following the introduction of free education by government this year.
And Private Schools Association of Zambia Kitwe District Secretary Nebert Silenga has told Phoenix News that about 60% of learners in private schools have left to join government schools, where free education is being offered.
Mr. Silenga is concerned with the current status quo of private schools in the country and the reducing numbers of pupils leaving private schools because the schools’ revenue is dependent on tuition fees paid by the pupils to survive.
He however says private schools are working simultaneously with various financial institutions to enlarge the revenue collected by this sector and hopes for a positive outcome at the annual general meeting for the association slated for this month end that will possibly find solutions that the sector is faced with.
