EEP President Chilufya Tayali
BA-HH, HOLD ON TIGHT TO THIS XI JINPING, WE NEED HIM MORE THAN EVER, THINGS ARE BAD IN ZAMBIA
Soon after President Hichilema got into power, some of us advised him to consider China as one of the strategic partners in fixing Zambia’s economic problems, but he seemed drunk with Western marihuana.
He was ecstatic; he thought the West would perform miracles, but over time, I am sure he has learned that China is more flexible, progressive, and effective.
Historically, China has been there for Zambia, not as a colonizer but as a partner in development. Those who studied such matters well would agree with me that, as we celebrate 60 years of independence, we also celebrate 60 years of diplomatic ties between Zambia and China.
Zambia’s 60th Independence Day theme was actually celebrated under two different themes. The first theme was “One Zambia, One Nation,” which honored the legacy of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, a key figure in Zambia’s independence and achievements ¹.
The second theme is “60 years strong: Honoring our heritage, embracing the future”. This theme emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and stability, highlighting Zambia’s progress and aspirations for the future.
But I also paid attention to the theme that marks 60 years of diplomatic ties between Zambia and China – “Pass on the spirit to the next generation and jointly build a shared future,”
The question is, what spirit will we pass on to the next generation regarding our diplomatic relationship with China?
I think we need to pass on a spirit of enthusiasm and honor for China’s unwavering partnership in Zambia’s developmental journey. From the early days of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) to recent projects like the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, several health facilities and many roads which have been done in partnership with China.
It is an undeniable fact that Chinese involvement in Zambia spans beyond infrastructure. China’s investment has laid the foundation for Zambia’s progress and prosperity. In Kabwe, the revitalization of Mulungushi Textiles showcases the ongoing collaboration in industrial development, while in mining, companies like Non-Ferrous China Africa (NFCA) are pioneering copper extraction, fueling economic growth, and creating jobs.
These joint efforts demonstrate the tangible impact of Zambia-China partnerships across sectors. China has also strengthened Zambia’s healthcare sector through initiatives like COVID-19 medical support, providing vaccines and essential supplies when it mattered most.
It is, therefore, reasonable and proper to encourage President Hichilema and his Govt continue strengthening our relationship with China while embracing other diplomatic relations that will help our Country.
