Barcelona to Vacate Camp Nou Again Next Season After Approving 510 Million Euro Funding Package
FC Barcelona supporters will have to wait longer than expected for a permanent return to their spiritual home. The Catalan giants are set to temporarily relocate back to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium next season following the official approval of a fresh 510 million euro financing package. This latest funding is specifically earmarked to complete the complex roof installation at the Spotify Camp Nou, delaying the club’s definitive homecoming until January 2028.
Financial Restructuring and Construction Delays
The decision comes as the club works to mitigate the growing economic fallout of ongoing construction setbacks. During a pivotal weekend vote, Barcelona socios officially ratified the new capital package to keep the ambitious Espai Barca redevelopment project on track. Club officials clarified that the supplemental injection was necessary to cover the rising costs caused by delays in project execution.
According to club treasurer Ferran Olive, the temporary move back to Montjuic is vital to ensure safety and allow intensive roof construction to proceed without interruption. The supplemental funding is structured into two main components:
• A 300 million euro tranche: This capital will allow for the completion of the Camp Nou stadium structure, which has been expanded from its original scope to include upgraded facilities, services, and advanced technological solutions.
• A 210 million euro tranche: This portion is being secured through two separate Media Notes issues of 105 million euros each. The first was executed in July 2026, with the second scheduled for late 2026.
This latest round of borrowing pushes the total projected cost of the massive stadium overhaul close to 2 billion euros.
Roadmap to the Grand Reopening
Despite the temporary disruption for matchgoing fans, the club has laid out a clear timeline for the phased reopening of the iconic arena. Stadium capacity is expected to grow incrementally over the coming seasons:
• The current matchday capacity stands at 62,000 spectators.
• Capacity will increase to 75,000 this season as the third tier is progressively reopened.
• Barcelona will welcome 95,000 fans for the official homecoming in January 2028.
• The stadium will reach its peak capacity of 105,000 spectators in time for the 2028-29 campaign.
The completed venue is already set to showcase its state-of-the-art features on the global stage, with UEFA officially selecting the renovated Camp Nou to host the prestigious Champions League final in 2029.
