BILL GATES WARNS NEXT 20 YEARS WILL BE MOST TUMULTUOUS IN HISTORY AS AI WIPES OUT JOBS

Bill Gates is sounding the alarm that artificial intelligence will unleash two decades of economic and social upheaval before any promised abundance arrives. In an October 22 interview on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, the Microsoft co-founder said the transition period will create clear winners and losers while machines take over work that once required people.

Gates stated, “My big concern is this 20-year transition period, where they’ll have winners and losers and a lot of disruption, and we have to get through that in order to get to that period of abundance.” He described the stretch as potentially “as tumultuous a period as there’s been in human history.” Even under the best case, he argued, the shift will be one of the most turbulent times people have faced.

The billionaire predicted humanoid robots will handle physical labor within years, including building houses, growing food, and performing surgery. “If we don’t choose to massively slow down or stop, then we will have robots that can build houses, grow food, do surgery,” Gates said. “And none of the things that human labor provides to the economy will be necessary for most goods and services.” White-collar roles in telesales, support, and accounting will vanish as AI handles them “radically cheaper, radically faster, and even more accurately.”

Gates noted society may need deliberate policy choices to limit work hours or reserve certain jobs for humans, such as childcare or the arts, simply to preserve employment and purpose. He also repeated earlier warnings that AI ranks as the most dangerous technology ever created, capable of amplifying cyberattacks and other threats if safeguards fail. The comments, amplified by the prediction market platform Kalshi, echo similar caution from figures like Elon Musk and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei about a rocky path ahead.

The warnings highlight how rapidly advancing systems could upend labor markets far faster than past technological shifts, leaving governments and workers to manage the fallout.
