Like I said, many politicians from Tonse Alliance and their supporters never understood what an alliance, or a special purpose vehicle (SPV) was. Because their focus was only to win elections and never considered what would happen if they lost, they never understood the effects of losing.
I want you to compare and contrast between the UDA and Tonse Alliance as you go down 😊
Firstly, an SPV generally means a temporary political arrangement created for a specific electoral objective, rather than a permanent political party. In simplest terms: it is a political vehicle used to bring different parties, politicians or groups together for one particular goal—usually winning an election. So, an SPV is different from a normal political party, which is generally intended to have a continuing political existence.
Let’s look at the UDA, what happened in 2006 after UPND lost elections?
Firstly,The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was formed in March 2006 by three parties: UPND, led by Anderson Mazoka, UNIP, led by Tilyenji Kaunda and FDD, led by Edith Nawakwi.
The purpose of this alliance was to prevent opposition votes from being divided and to present a single presidential candidate.
However, Anderson Mazoka died in May 2006, only months before the election. Hakainde Hichilema then became UPND leader and was adopted as the UDA’s presidential candidate.
Fast forward, in the 28 September 2006 election, Hichilema came third with about 25% of the presidential vote. The UDA won 26 parliamentary seats.
After the election, the UDA did not remain a permanent political coalition. The alliance eventually broke up and was dissolved in 2008.
The three parties therefore went their separate political ways. UPND continued under Hichilema, while UNIP and FDD continued as separate parties.
That’s why as a presidential candidate of an alliance-one must at least be leading a political party and consequently use the same as a special purpose vehicle and adopt candidates on it in cases of losing an election-because an alliance doesn’t mean merging participating political parties. Hence,parties may go separate ways after elections leaving a losing candidate with a broken political future.
Only a win was going to have a direct political value to Mundubile in Tonse Alliance: that he and his team knew. It even made them more desperate to win at all costs even when they had no capacity.
What happened to the MPs after a failed UDA?
UPND remained with its MPs, as well as UNIP and FDD. With Tonse alliance: NRPUP and RP won MPs while Mundubile and Makebi walked away with, “we came out second in the 2026 general election.”😊
The only party crying the loudest in the end, are those who went into an alliance as individuals-without a political party or never adopted candidates at parliamentary level on their parties.
But what did the UPND learned from the UDA?
👉One of the consequences of losing an election, leads to a broken alliance. How did UPND handle its future alliance? They called it, the UPND alliance, to protect its identity in case of future conflicts.
For debate purposes: if Mundubile and Makebi weren’t in incarceration, were they going to have power over NRPUP?
