BULGARIA VOTES IN PRESIDENTIAL RUNOFF WITH UKRAINE AND RUSSIA IN FOCUS

Bulgarians are voting today in a presidential runoff between incumbent Iliana Yotova and former caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov—candidates offering sharply different approaches to Russia and support for Ukraine.

Yotova led the 25 October first round with approximately 34.76%, followed by Gyurov with 31.95%. Turnout was around 22%, making participation a central question in today’s contest. Polls close at 20:00 local time.

Backed by Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria party and the Socialists, Yotova advocates dialogue with Moscow and opposes continued military assistance to Ukraine. She argues that negotiations are the route to peace.

Gyurov, supported by pro-Western reformist parties, backs Ukraine and has called on Russia to end its aggression. While serving as caretaker prime minister, he signed a security cooperation agreement with Kyiv.

For Ukraine, the distinction matters. Calls for peace must confront the responsibility of the country that launched the invasion—and the protection Ukraine needs while that invasion continues.

Bulgaria is an EU and NATO member, and its presidency carries political influence even though the government directs much of national policy. The result will help shape the country’s public position toward Moscow, its allies and Ukraine at a consequential moment for European security.
