Cadet Instructor in Court for Causing Death of four Pupils

A 20-year-old cadet instructor at Nanga Secondary School is appearing in court in connection with the death of four pupils who drowned while on training.

In this case, Chipego Hamafula, is charged with four counts of alleged manslaughter.

Particulars of the offence are that on June 11, 2022, Hamafula allegedly caused the death of Lewis Sindembe, Israel Mweemba, Vincent Simfukwe and Peter Chibabe.

Facts before court are that Hamafula told members of the cadet he was drilling to swim in an old gravel pit.

Unfortunately, four of the pupils failed to swim and drowned.

When the matter came up for explanation of charge before Mazabuka magistrate, Pasmall Mweetwa, the accused could not take plea because the matter is still pending instructions from the DPP.
