CALLS TO ABOLISH POSITION OF DISTRICT COMMISSIONER OPPOSED
By Prudence Siabana
Former Chikankata District Commissioner Peter Mwiinde says there is nothing wrong with the UPND government maintaining the position of district commissioners in the country.
Debate has ensued across a section of society as to why president Hakainde Hichilema has made new appointments of district commissioners following the termination of contracts of district commissioners when he promised to abolish these positions when he was in opposition.
But Mr Mwiinde has opposed those calling on the President to abolish the position of district commissioners saying district commissioners are civil servants who play a critical role and are responsible of implementing some of the government policies and programmes at district level.
In an interview, Mr. Mwiinde has reminded the public that District Commissioners being top civil servants at district level also supervise all civil servants at district level hence it is wrong to suggest that the position of district commissioner is for political expediency.
