CAN A ZAMBIAN STILL SPEAK FREELY IN ZAMBIA?

WHY ARE WE AFRAID?

Let us be honest, Zambians. Let us speak like adults. There is a fear in this country that we are not naming.

People speak in corridors, but whisper in public. People complain on WhatsApp, but clap in public. People send me inbox to say “Rev, speak for us,” because they are afraid to speak for themselves.

So I must ask, Has Zambia become a country where to disagree with power is to become an enemy of the state? If that is true, then we are all in danger.

Let us agree on this, as Zambians, not as UPND, not as PF, not as Tonse:

1. If something is wrong, it is wrong, even if my party did it.

2. If something is right, it is right, even if my enemy did it.

3. If a person is arrested, we must ask, Was the law followed, or was power followed?

An accusation is NOT a conviction.
A Facebook post is NOT evidence.
And detention is NOT supposed to be punishment.

If government builds a road, let us clap. If government abuses the law, let us talk. That is not being opposition. That is being a citizen.

A nation dies not when people do wrong. A nation dies when good people become afraid to say that wrong is wrong.

And I say this with love to those in power, You do not need citizens who fear you. You need citizens who trust you enough to tell you the truth.

To my fellow Church leaders, we cannot shout truth on Sunday and go silent on Monday when truth will cost us an invitation. The Church is not UPND. The Church is not TONSE or PF. The Church is the conscience. And a conscience that negotiates with fear is dead.

So I will say it plainly:

THIS IS RIGHT – we will praise it.
THIS IS WRONG – we will name it.
THIS IS JUST – we will defend it.
THIS IS UNJUST – we will not keep quiet about it.

Zambia does not belong to a few people in offices. It belongs to the woman in the market. It belongs to the youth with no job. It belongs to all of us.

Let us take our voice back. Not to insult one another, but to rescue our future. Speak, Zambia. God is listening, and history is recording.

ONE ZAMBIA. ONE PEOPLE. ONE FUTURE, BUT ONLY IF WE FIND OUR VOICE AGAIN.

Rev Peter K. Nsama.
Lusaka, 7th October 2026.

  1. Ba Rev. Nsama, we are free now to express ourselves than we were under PF. This is a fact. During PF rule, the then Assistant IG, Mr. Bonny “Bone Breaker” Kapeso would publicly threaten to break the bones of anyone who dared to protest. And the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Kampyongo, was well known for constantly issuing warning against the public. Maybe the Rev. was living outside Zambia and has no idea what we went through.

Insults and spreading falsehoods should never be regarded as an acceptable means of expressing oneself. As a nation, we should be truthful and maintain mutual respect even when we hold different views. For example the diatribe Dr. Katele Kalumba engaged in is totally unacceptable and crosses the boundary of decency.

Those who defame or insult others must be held to account.

Iam sure Rev. Mwansa has nothing to fear as long as he doesnot resort to insults and falsehoods. His articles are critical of the government and so far no one has harassed him. Personally, I dont agree with him that people are fearful.

Only those who cross swords with the law need be fearful.

  2. We Zambians have been speaking freely since independence. We have never been arresyted because we do not threaten violence and we do not insult. We do not vow to kill or be killed and we do not call people Satanists without a thread of evidence. We have praised where praise is due and we have criticised where we did not agree, but all this has been done respectively. Some of us have even seen our ideas taken on board, adopted and implemented by the ruling party- whether UNIP, MMD, PF or UPND. So why do you fear?
