Wake Up, Africa: Captain Traoré Names the Deepest Wound – Our Own Stockholm Syndrome Toward the West

In a searing address that has echoed across the continent, Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré has laid bare the psychological chains still binding many Africans to their former oppressors. Speaking on 16 July 2026 to the forces vives of Yaadga, the young revolutionary leader declared that for 400 years Westerners came to deport Africans to foreign lands and “kill us in every possible way.” Black people always resisted, he reminded his listeners. The question that now haunts the continent is why that resistance has grown so difficult to see and sustain today.

“They traumatized us, barbarised us,” Traoré said. “We love them more than we love ourselves. That’s the Stockholm syndrome.” Without conscious awakening to this fact, he warned, Africans are “doomed” – the old powers will continue finishing them off “one way or another.”

The speech lands at a decisive historical moment. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have expelled French military bases, formed the Alliance of Sahel States, and begun asserting control over their resources. Traoré’s government has moved to process gold domestically rather than ship raw ore abroad. These are concrete steps toward economic sovereignty.

Yet the Captain insists that material decolonization will fail if the mind remains colonized. Loving the West “more than ourselves” manifests in the preference for imported goods over local production, the fetishization of Western education and passports, the willingness of some leaders to host foreign bases while their own youth die in under-equipped armies, and the internal division that imperialists have always exploited. what are your thoughts on this…
