CARITAS ZAMBIA SAYS THIRD TERM DEBATE PLOY TO DIVERT PUBLIC ATTENTION FROM PRESSING NATIONAL ISSUES

By Nelson Zulu

CARITAS Zambia says the ongoing debate on whether to scrap or extend the presidential term limit through a constitutional amendment is a ploy to divert public attention from more pressing national issues.

CARITAS Zambia Executive Director Father Gabriel Mapulanga says the country should instead focus on issues arising from the aftermath of the election, including the need for dialogue, finding a way forward and addressing economic challenges

Father Mapulanga tells phoenix news that the debate on a possible third presidential term is unnecessary at a time when the country needs to prioritise more pressing national concerns.

He says although some senior UPND members have continued to discuss the issue, CARITAS Zambia does not expect President Hakainde Hichilema to comment on the matter, as he believes the president is aware of what he is doing, despite some people speaking on his behalf.
