BISHOP LUNGU SEEKS PRIVATE MEETING WITH PRESIDENT HH OVER JUSTICE, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS & POLITICAL CONCERNS.
Catholic Diocese of Chipata Bishop George Lungu has called for a private meeting with President Hakainde Hichilema to discuss what he describes as growing concerns over justice, constitutional rights and the political situation in Zambia.
Bishop Lungu says the proposed meeting should provide a peaceful and respectful platform for raising concerns being held by citizens, while also giving Government an opportunity to explain its position.
He says the initiative is not intended to embarrass or confront President Hichilema, but rather to contribute to dialogue, peace, justice and national reconciliation.
In a Pastoral Statement issued today and seen by Breeze FM News, the Bishop has particularly raised concern over the closure of court premises on August 24th, 2026, which coincided with the final day of the constitutional period for challenging presidential election results.
While acknowledging that the Judiciary cited security concerns and that authorities denied that the President ordered the closure, Bishop Lungu says the timing of the closure has raised serious questions among citizens about access to justice and the protection of constitutional rights.
He says such concerns must be addressed through lawful, peaceful and transparent means.
Bishop Lungu says the Catholic Church will not take sides between political parties, but maintains that the Church cannot remain silent when human dignity, justice, peace and the rule of law are at stake.
He has consequently called for a non-partisan delegation comprising religious and civic representatives to meet with the President and appropriate Government officials.
The Eastern province Chief Shepherd has also urged Zambians to reject hatred, intimidation and violence, saying political differences should not be allowed to destroy national unity.
He says Zambia belongs to all its citizens and has urged the country to focus on building a peaceful and just nation for future generations.
The security concerns that led to the closure of courts on 24th August 2026 can not be fully disclosed fully without compromising ongoing investigations.
So unless the Bishop and whatever delegation he will carry with him have security clearance or is a member of one of our security wings investigating the matter, there is nothing to talk about.
The treason case will reveal both sides of the story. And justice will be served by the courts. HH is not the one to serve justice. And if the Bishop thinks he can make HH divert the course of justice in order to release any prisoners, he will go back very disappointed.

I have a lot of respect for Bishop Lungu, just like the late Archbishop Mpundu. I hope he will be granted the audience he seeks with the President.
He means well.
Iam equally concorned at the manner the courts were shut on the final day for the submission of the presidential election petition.
