UPND’s Adrian Banda has been declared the winner of the Mandevu parliamentary by-election, following the withdrawal of all three opposition contenders from the race.

Banda’s declaration comes after the Electoral Commission of Zambia confirmed that Daniel Chisenga of the Forum for Democracy and Development, Ntazana Musukuma Mutungwa of the Leadership Movement and independent candidate Daniel Daka had withdrawn their candidature, leaving him as the sole candidate.

The by-election had been called following the disruption of the August 13 general election results process in Mandevu, after unidentified individuals reportedly attacked the constituency’s results totalling centre, destroying election equipment and making it impossible to complete the results aggregation.
