The Chief Mweemba Royal Council of Sinazongwe District in Southern Province is calling for government’s intervention in a matter where a Chinese Investor, African Power Coal Mining is allegedly asking villagers to relocate without fulfilling terms of their agreement in the resettlement package.
Council Chairperson Charles Mudenda tells Phoenix News in Sinazongwe that the people in affected areas are running out of patience and may resort to violence because the mining company gave them up to last month-end to move out of the land for the commencement of the mining activities.
Mr Mudenda says the villagers are not satisfied with the compensation fees given to them by the company because the initial agreement was that the company finds land to relocate them and build some infrastructure such as roads, boreholes school and a clinic.
But when contacted for a comment, African Power Coal Limited Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Kays says the company fulfilled most of the agreed expenses and all the affected villagers were paid the value of money assessed by the office of the vice president
Mr. Kays says the construction of clinics and other infrastructure will only be done as a corporate social responsibility.
