CHIWENGA HEADS TO CHINA FOR TRADE AND INVESTMENT DRIVE

Vice-President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has left for China on a high-level visit focused on expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation between Harare and Beijing.
Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding confirmed Chiwenga’s departure, saying he had the “privilege of seeing off” the Vice-President at the airport as he left for China.
“I had the privilege of seeing off the Hon. Vice President, Gen. (Rtd) Dr. C. G. D. N. Chiwenga, at the airport as he departed for his visit to China,” Zhou said in a post on X.
Chiwenga is scheduled to address the Global Trade in Services Summit in Beijing and the Xiong’an Digital Trade Innovation and Development Conference during the visit.
He will also officiate at the Zim-China Business Forum in Hangzhou, as Zimbabwe seeks to attract further investment from Chinese companies and deepen commercial ties between the two countries.
According to Zhou, the Vice-President will also undertake site visits to Huayou Cobalt and Tsingshan Holding Group, both of which have established significant operations in Zimbabwe.
“He will also officiate the Zim-China Business Forum in Hangzhou and undertake site visits to Huayou Cobalt and Tsingshan Holding Group—both of which have already established significant operations in Zimbabwe—alongside other leading Chinese enterprises, with the objective of attracting further investment into the country,” Zhou said.
The visit comes as Zimbabwe continues to position China as a key partner in its industrialisation, mining, manufacturing and infrastructure development agenda.
Huayou Cobalt has invested heavily in Zimbabwe’s lithium sector, while Tsingshan has established a major presence through its investments in the country’s emerging steel industry.
Chiwenga’s engagements are expected to provide an opportunity for Zimbabwe to showcase investment opportunities while seeking to build on existing Chinese investments and attract new capital.
Zhou wished Chiwenga and the delegation a successful mission, saying: “My best wishes to Hon. Chiwenga and the entire delegation for a highly productive visit.”
The visit underscores the deepening economic relationship between Zimbabwe and China, with Harare seeking greater investment, value addition and industrial development as it pursues its broader economic transformation agenda.
