Continued Work Stoppage At CBU Delays Results For Returning Students

CONTINUED WORK STOPPAGE AT CBU DELAYS RESULTS FOR RETURNING STUDENTS

By Michael Kaluba

The continued work stoppage at the Copperbelt University-CBU- has resulted in delayed results for returning students that were supposed to be released on Monday this week and is casting doubt on reopening the university later this month if the situation persists.

According to the unions namely Copperbelt University Senior Administrative, Professional Technical Staff Union, Copperbelt University Academics Union and Copperbelt university and Allied Workers Union, the continued delay to address the work stoppage will require that the school calendar is reviewed to allow for the release of results, admission of new students on 29 November and registration of returning students a week later.

Speaking on behalf of the three stakeholder unions, Copperbelt University Academics Union Deputy General Secretary Musonda Kabaso says, unless government is prepared to see the university come to a compete halt, the grievances of the workers must be addressed as a matter of urgency.

Dr. Kabaso disclosed that the three stakeholder unions have written to the Minister of Education Douglas Siakalima challenging him to urgently look into the matter and to consider the plea of the workers for improved conditions of service.

The CBU workers who were as of today singing solidarity songs and chanting anti management slogans on campus, have continued with their sitting protest and will review their course of action on Monday next week if there will be no new communication from university management over the stalled 2021 negotiations.
