DECISION TO OFFER ZAMBIAN LAND TO KENYAN FARMERS RAISES UPROAR

The Opposition New Heritage Party-NHP- says it is disturbed to learn that Government has offered 20,000 hectares of Zambian Land to Kenyan Farmers for Large Scale farming.

On March, 06, 2023, Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo Phiri after a meeting with Kenyan agriculture cabinet secretary Mithika Linturi announced that the two countries will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) allowing Kenyan farmers to grow maize in Zambia and that the deal is aimed at stabilizing Kenya’s maize flour demands and prices, adding that the produced maize will specifically be for the Kenyan market.

And reacting to this in a statement, Party President Chishala Kateka tells Mafken FM radio that this decision is shocking especially that no one was consulted on the matter.

She adds that despite the UPND being in Government does not mean they have been given the right or mandate to give away the country’s heritage.

Ms. Kateka has however claimed that it is not the Government’s responsibility to stabilize Kenya maize flour demands and prices.

Meanwhile, Ms. Kateka has since wondered why Government does not empower Zambians who are just as capable, to grow the maize and then export them to Kenya, while stressing that this shall not only ensure that they keep land but also help in the much needed foreign exchange returns to Zambia.
