By pumulo mubita

Zambia’s Vice President Mutale Nalumango has expressed optimism about the country’s food security, despite facing the worst drought in living memory. During the commemoration of World Food Day, Nalumango stated, “I have seen and tasted it, I am glad we are food secure. I can confidently state that we are ready to face 2025.”

Nalumango’s sentiments were echoed at the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, where she noted, “We have already experienced the worst, we therefore stand ready to face what 2024-2025 rain season will bring.” This comes after a national state of emergency was declared in February due to the drought, which has affected around 9.8 million people in 84 out of 116 districts .

The Vice President attributed Zambia’s food security to its diversified local nutritious food sources. She praised Zambians for their hard work and resilience in the face of adversity and called on all citizens to join hands and work towards a resilient future.

However, reports indicate that the drought has had devastating consequences, including significant crop losses, increased livestock deaths, and worsening poverty ¹. The drought has also impacted access to safe water, with 3.5 million people targeted for support .

Despite these challenges, Nalumango’s statement highlights Zambia’s efforts to prioritize food security and disaster risk reduction. The government’s initiatives, along with support from organizations like Plan International, aim to provide relief to vulnerable families and promote sustainable livelihoods .
