DHS Secretary Mullin Drops Bombshell: Ilhan Omar Probe Is a Massive Multi-Person Case With Warrants, Seized Docs, and Family Subpoenas

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed on Fox News that the federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar is no narrow inquiry. It is a large case assembled by Homeland Security Investigations agents and handed to the Department of Justice, which is now running the show. Agents have executed multiple search warrants, seized documents, and issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including to members of Omar’s family.

A search of Omar’s Washington, DC, home took place on October 12. Mullin stressed that authorities are simply enforcing the law equally across the board, not running a political operation. He noted that Democrats had previously used the DOJ and FBI against political opponents, and that facts, not theater, will decide this one.

The probe centers on longstanding allegations that Omar engaged in an immigration fraud conspiracy by marrying Ahmed Elmi, described as her alleged brother and a British citizen, to secure him legal U.S. residency. Investigators are also looking at whether she made false statements on government documents tied to her citizenship and inflated her net worth by tens of millions of dollars on House financial disclosures. A 2009 Hennepin County marriage license shows her surname crossed out and replaced with “Elmi” before being changed back to “Omar.” Omar has previously denied marrying a relative.

The claims first drew scrutiny in 2016. That earlier effort was shut down in 2021 under a Biden-appointed U.S. Attorney and has since been reopened. Omar was born in Somalia, emigrated to the U.S. in 1995, and has a complex personal history involving marriages to Ahmed Hirsi and later Elmi while reportedly living with Hirsi. The current scope, involving family members and multiple targets, signals investigators are treating this as far more than a paperwork issue.
