DISTRIBUTION OF HONEYBEE DRUGS QUESTIONED

By Prudence Siabana
Pharmaceutical Expert Jerome Kanyika has questioned the distribution of drugs by the Zambia Medicines and Supplies Agency- ZAMSA –supplied by Honeybee, which failed medical quality assurance test by the Zambia Medicines and Regulatory Authority –ZAMRA-.

The Zambia Medicines and Supplies Agency has released a consignment of the controversial honeybee drugs that had been quarantined for failing a quality assurance test.

The ministry of health in 2020 contracted Honeybee to import and supply condoms, pregnancy test kits, and latex gloves for public and hospital use in zambia for $17 million deal, but it was later revealed that pharmacy imported leaky condoms and defective latex gloves, pregnancy test kits, and vaginal inserts from India which were distributed to some health facilities before distribution was halted.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr Kanyika has challenged ZAMRA to come out in the open and show the certificates indicating whether the drugs that are being distributed are fit for human consumption.

Mr. Kanyika is shocked that such illegalities have continued even under the UPND government and has urged the Ministry of Health to move in to rectify the problem at ZAMSA before many lives are lost as a result of consuming expired drugs.
