DO CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S?

Throughout human history, man has celebrated various virtues and events. At independence we celebrate freedom. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus. On Valentines, we celebrate the gift of love. Not everyone celebrates the different events but we all celebrate what is closest to our hearts.1 Corinthians 10:23-33 says “All things are lawful but not all things edify…”

Valentine’s is not a Christian Holiday and there is nowhere in the Bible where it is mentioned.

However, there seems to be no biblical reason why Christians should not celebrate Valentine’s Day by sharing flowers, Chocolate and/or cards, or any other romantic gesture or gift with their loved ones.

As with celebrating any holiday, the decision should be between the individual and God. Some people feel very strongly against observing any secular holiday, including valentines and CHRISTMAS, especially those that may be considered to be of pagan origin, while others see it as harmless. The important thing to remember is that celebrating or not celebrating valentines should not be a cause for pride or division among Christians and amongst couples.

For those who do decide to celebrate this year’s Valentine’s with your loved ones, it should not be a cause for forced financial demands, let it be done freely from your heart and according to available resources. Also spare a momment for those that are widowed, those that are single and those that have had their love bruised. There is plenty of love and happiness to go round.

Remember, Love is patient, love is kind. Love Seeks not it’s own..
