By Michael Nyumbu

REGGAE Artist Maiko Zulu says the Rastafarian Community in the country is disturbed by the policy in government schools that denies dreadlocked pupils from accessing education.

He was commenting on the case of a grade 8 pupil named Chisanga from Kasama, whose school place at Kasama boys has been withheld.

Zulu says Rastafarians, like any other group of Zambians have the right to a religious group that satisfies their conscious, saying any form of discrimination on the them is not acceptable.

He is saddened that Rastafarians have continued to face discrimination ranging from denial from acquiring National Registration Cards – NRCs and accessing education from government schools.

Zulu wonders how the Rastafarians have continued to face discrimination when religious groups such as Muslims are allowed in government schools in veils.

And Human Rights Activists Wesley Miyanda says denying education to Rastafarians in government schools is an infringement on their human rights.

Miyanda explained every human being has rights to associate themselves with a religious group of their choice without having to face discrimination.

He says that the Rastafarian pupil should be allowed in government school because he has a right to do so.
