….Civil Society shifts focus to legal reforms after failed vote petition

IN a dramatic twist following the highly contested August 2026 general elections, prominent human rights lawyer and civil society leader Linda Kasonde says the legal challenge against the election results has been called off.
The announcement marks a definitive end to weeks of speculation regarding a potential court battle over the integrity of the recent polls.
According to sources a direct communication was addressed to stakeholders and allies, where Ms Kasonde wrote to concede that the legal team lacked the necessary groundwork to move forward.
“It appears that we do not have enough evidence to proceed with the petition challenging the just ended general elections as all efforts to get the Petition off the ground have not succeeded,” Ms Kasonde stated.
Her admission highlights the immense logistical and evidentiary hurdles faced by petitions of this scale, which required outright to documentation of irregularities within strict statutory timelines.
Ms Kasonde told the stakeholders that despite rigorous attempts by legal teams and monitors to compile a viable case, the threshold required to launch a formal challenge in the Constitutional Court could not be met.
She revealed a major shift in strategy that would focus to move away from trying to overturn the election outcome and toward tackling the root systemic issues that defined the pre-election environment.
“Going forward, we hope to shift our focus towards electoral reform challenging decisions, measures and laws taken in the run-up to the August 2026 Election,” Ms Kasonde explained.
She called for sustained unity ahead of the upcoming legislative battles saying: “We hope we can rely on your support as we take up those challenges. Thank you so much for the support and solidarity rendered to-date.”
The decision to pivot to systemic reform is viewed by political analysts as a pragmatic move.
While a retrospective petition faces high legal barriers, proactive litigation against restrictive laws could fundamentally reshape the landscape for future democratic processes in Zambia.
In my view, the starting point should be strengthening lawyers’ ethical code of conduct; otherwise, you will be mopping the floor while the sewer drainage continues to flow into the house. Your house of lawyers is full of garbage that needs cleaning. For example, some lawyers are currently accused of money laundering, but they claim the stashed money belongs to Edgar Lungu. Is that correct? What have you said about that? I believe that lawyers pose the greatest danger to the nation.

That why i say we have trained white collar thieves in zambia than upright legal counsel. They are more focused on money making than the law itself. That’s why the government should let citizen do more own their own leaving out these cream separators from draining poor zambian, and now they feel like politics is the best money cow and they are the best group in the country to milk it. Y9u can see how sangwa changes position on one issue, the other is a judge owl waking up judges to sign orders in the mid of the night. Its really sad. Makebi arguments on bill 7 all soar translation the law has become more of the side one lawyer stands not as the case is viewed.
But these are the same people who strongly opposed any law reforms which the new dawn government wanted to push. Is this when they have realised that it was important?
