The European Union has formally recognized the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), marking a major turning point in its relationship with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.



EU Special Representative for the Sahel, João Cravinho, announced that the EU is ready for further dialogue and stronger cooperation with the bloc.



He emphasized that future EU engagement will be aligned with the priorities set by AES member states.


This recognition signals a significant shift in EU–Sahel relations as the region undergoes deep political and strategic changes.



It also opens a new chapter of engagement between Europe and the Sahel under a framework defined by regional sovereignty and shared interests.
