Farmer caught in R6.6 million illegal Eskom power scheme

A farmer in Leeupoort, near Fochville in Gauteng, has been caught running an illegal electricity operation, diverting power from Eskom and reselling it to around 600 homes in a nearby informal settlement.

The scheme, which allegedly relied on stolen equipment from City Power and Eskom, has cost the power utility an estimated R6.6 million in losses.

Eskom revealed that its investigation into the matter began in 2018, underscoring the persistent issue of electricity theft affecting the utility.
