FODEP QUESTIONS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S URGENCY TO AMEND CONSTITUTION BEFORE 2026 ELECTIONS

By Limpo Nyambe

The Foundation for Democratic Process -FODEP-has questioned President Hakainde Hichilema’s urgency to amend Zambia’s constitution before the 2026 general elections.

FODEP Vice president Mike Munshanga believes Zambians are not in a rush for piecemeal amendments but prefer a thorough and comprehensive process to address critical issues, including electoral reforms.

Mr. Mushanga argues that attempting constitutional amendments ahead of the 2026 general elections risks undermining the integrity and inclusivity of the process, potentially leading to rushed or contentious outcomes.

He tells Phoenix News that amending a few clauses in the constitution before 2025 so that the electoral act can also be amended before the elections in 2026, leaving other contentious provisions, is not in the interests of constitutionalism and good governance.

President Hichilema recently said that government will proceed to amend non-contentious clauses of the constitution despite some people disapproving the process.
