GARY NKOMBO PROPOSES REDUCED RETIREMENT AGE TO GIVE ROOM TO YOUTHS

He writes;

How about we reduce on the retirement age.
To leave room for fresh blood
Everyone needs a job
And must get it
You fought for freedom.
Let’s see what youths can do also.

Thoughts on this?

  1. But this is what was agreed. Let’s have a budget for these retirees aged 55yrs and above and give them 6 month’s notice in Jan 2022. By June 2022 we start employing others. Note that some Pension Schemes are private and can pay even today.

  2. The law already provides that those who signed there employment contracts before 2016 shud retire at 55yrs. Last year the PF govt used the office of Antorney General to rule that those who do not sign contracts like teachers shud retire at 60 but even teachers have representatives who sign for them. Am sure you have seen the consequences of this disappointment to the youth by PF. Just let someone sue and retire all of them after court ruling.

  3. Garry Nkombo, please don’t be childish and too excited with your victory. Why are you so ageist, discriminating against older workers!
To start with, you’re an old MP, why didn’t you give a chance to Kizzy you hupocrite?
Older workers are human beings, just like youths, but the economy needs their skills and experience more than your weird thoughts.
Instead of thinking on expanding the economy to accommodate your youth and the aged, you have engaged yourself in negative thinking against the people that voted for you. Discrimination should never be entertained or else you live to regret.
Remember, it’s the same responsible old people who have been sustaining those unemployed youths all these years and now you want discard them like tissue papers. That is the stain of UPND, wanting to keep the inexperienced youths so that are easy to manipulate, no way sir.
It’s too early for you to become the party of discrimination.
Go home and think properly you tired old cow!

    • Bad comment. It’s just a humble suggestion soliciting for an intelligent contribution not this PF mentality of insults. Anyway who would love to work until 60? we need to retire strong.

    • Mr chilyata Sir do you know how many youths outside seeking for that job you are holding like your family! Don’t compare the job you are in and the victory honourable NKOMBO and the rest won, and you are the same people who didn’t want change for you to be satisfying your bellies. If you didn’t invest in business that’s not our problem!

  4. I welcome the idea of reducing retirement age. People should be retiring at 55 years and be given their full package. We don’t want the current proposed NAPSA retirement arrangements of getting monthly peanuts instead of one getting his or her full package.

  5. It is good food for thought.
It’s true that the Pf givernment did not have a heart for many unemployed graduates when it increased retirement age. What was the rationale for doing that as Zambia when we were already caught upt with high unemployment rate?
More over some old workers are already tired. They need to rest or become employers. Only those who have access to government of company cofers what to remain even when they become terminally ill.
Let the youths take over now. They have suffered too much

    Viva youths!

  6. Mr Nkombo idea is great. Pay them their full benefits as you let them go. They also had no experience when they started work years back. The world is dynamic…science and technology, let educated young ones take over, they do not need that much experience, we need their various skills to move forward.

  7. Superficial !
    Short-term Solutions! Myopia!
Are we sure that this is a Long-term employment creation Solution? Zambia is for all Zambians, you or old! This is the problem MMD had created. Now UPND wants to create the same problem? Hell No!!
In fact, what we need is to increase the Retirement Age to sixty five (65) years, which Age was there before the MMD Administration!
The UPND should just plan, communicate and implement lasting solutions, and not resorting to Appeasements, It is too early. We are certainly not short of ideas as a Nation, Zambia is for All Zambians!!

    • I advocate for early retirement of civil servants. Pushing paper and stamping documents can be done by any one. Why maintain a police officer upto 65. Can 65 years old police officer chase a thief? Immigration officer at 65 ? Only specialized professions can be maintained upto that age such as Doctors, Judges.

  8. No discrimination Mr Nkombo we are all zambians, work on finding lasting solutions as regards to employment creation. Please do not humiliate the elderly.

  9. EC : YOUR HONOR I WANT TO PETITION THE RESULTS OF A SYSTEM I CREATED AND
CONTROLLED BECAUSE IT DID NOT GIVE ME THE RESULTS I EXPECTED
JUDGE : WHAT REMEDY ARE YOU SEEKING
    EC : NULLIFICATION YOUR HONOR
JUDGE : NULLIFYING YOUR RESULTS WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING
EC : I STAND BY MY REQUESTED REMEDY
JUDGE : OKEY YOUR VOTES ARE NULLIFIED
EC : WHAT OF THE VOTES OF THE OTHER ONE YOUR HONOR
JUDGE : HE HAS NOT COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SYSTEM YOU CREATED AND CONTROLLED,
    CASE DISMISSED
EC : THANK YOU YOUR HONOR
    JUDGE : CASE DISMISSED

  10. As someone has already mentioned, no appeasements, everyone voted for you including the older workers you want to humiliate. No discrimination, it’s certainly too early.

  11. Why didn’t you give a chance to someone else yourself iin mazabuka central. You are there because you want to earn a living, you are playing double standards. Leave the older workers alone . Let them also enjoy the economic freedom they voted for. Hypocrite.

  12. Garry, old and young are all zambians. Don’t get too excited, if anything what are you too still doing in parliament why didn’t you give chance to young people if you care that much. You are not bring honest.

  13. Brilliant idea. Only specialized professions such as medical doctors, judges may be retained upto 65 years. But the rest non essential workers can retire at 55 years.

Just imagine, passport officers, police men, soldiers, prisoner warders, some teachers, nurses, clerks, administrators and all paper pushers in government need to be retired at 55 years.

The Government should also allow those who have lost interest in the civil service to retire any time after they reach 45 years.

This will induce economic activity as retirees will use their resources in the economy.

  14. Great idea Honorable.
Most workers would actually gladly retire at 55 years.
The lingering on the job beyond that age is because most employers have failed to deliver on the promised retirement benefits as due. Some retirees have died and others are still waiting for benefits for over one and half decades. Such a scenario sets fear in workers to retire earlier.
To dramatize, if today the employers said to those beyond 55 or 60; retire now, and you shall walk away with ZWK half a million and a monthly pension at 80% of your current salary, most if not all in that bracket will gladly retire. There would be many job vacancies for youths to take over.
Time indeed moves. In the ’70s, companies went around in schools advertising themselves to students to join them when they finish school.

  15. I used to be a civil servant myself and any public service has similar rules. I look at the civil service as training ground and should as much as possible be open to all Zambians to work as public servants. Of late I have however seen the civil service becoming a click. Those that are leaving the civil service due to age make shore they leave it to their relatives or children of their friends and relatives. One way of availing an opportunity to most Zambians to work in the public service is an early retirement at 55 years or after 30 years of service which ever comes first. In addition there should be a window for early retirement after 20 years of service. I know most civil servants get sick just to think of retirement but they should accept reality and look forward to life beyond retirement. On retirement civil servants should go into private sector or politics.

  16. Garry leave people to retire when they want to. There is nothing wrong with current retirement policy. There is a lot you can do to create employment for young people than discriminating against the older workers.

  17. Tampering with and failure to pay retirees benefits at exit and for years ensuing is the only reason that the PF government decided to revise the retirement age. The system that was in place allowed for retention on contract for those workers whose services were needed where so determined for good reasons. Of course its probably the health ministry justified in increasing retirement age for health care services are greatly strained of staff and longer experience improves care and availability of public health information
