GERMANY: SOLDIERS OF RUSSIAN AND BELARUSIAN ORIGIN BARRED FROM BRIGADE IN LITHUANIA

Germany’s Bundeswehr has reportedly refused to transfer several soldiers of Russian or Belarusian origin to the German brigade stationed in Lithuania after they failed security screening, according to sources cited by Bild.

The German Defense Ministry reportedly considers personnel with ties to Russia or Belarus to face a higher risk of blackmail, coercion or ideological influence from the Kremlin.

The affected soldiers have not been dismissed from the Bundeswehr. Instead, they remain in the German armed forces but are reportedly being assigned to positions requiring a lower level of security clearance.

Berlin maintains that the measures are intended as security precautions rather than discrimination or stigmatization.

German military personnel are still permitted to travel to Russia and Belarus to visit relatives. However, military counterintelligence reportedly recommends that such trips be systematically reported, citing cases in which soldiers and their family members have faced questioning or pressure while in those countries.

German lawmaker Roderich Kiesewetter said he considers it justified to exclude personnel serving in the Lithuania-based brigade if they support what he described as Kremlin narratives

The reported measures highlight Germany’s heightened security concerns surrounding its military presence on NATO’s eastern flank amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
