GRACE BANDA 22 ARRESTED FOR STEALING A 3 MONTHS OLD BABY IN SHANTUMBU
Chilenje Police Station has reported the safe recovery of a three-month-old baby boy who was abducted on November 25, 2024. The suspect, identified as Grace Banda, 22, was apprehended thanks to the swift action of the baby’s parents and concerned community members.
According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the baby’s mother, Inness Siameba, 24, had gone to Shantumbu Market on November 25 around 1700 hours with her husband, Choolwe Mweetwa, 30. While at the market, they encountered Banda, who introduced herself as a neighbor and offered to carry the baby under the guise of assisting them.
Upon arriving at the family’s home, Banda excused herself, claiming she needed to retrieve her brazier from her house nearby. Hours passed without her return, prompting the worried parents to investigate. To their shock, Banda could not be found, and an immediate search was launched with the help of the public.
At approximately 2030 hours, Banda was located in her landlord’s house, holding the baby, now dressed in new clothes. When confronted, she falsely claimed the child was hers. However, the baby’s mother proved her rightful claim by successfully breastfeeding him, putting all doubts to rest.
Banda was then apprehended by vigilant community members and handed over to the police.
The police have since opened a docket and launched investigations into the incident. Meanwhile, Hamoonga commended the community for their prompt response and cooperation, which ensured the safe recovery of the baby.
“This case serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to remain vigilant, especially in public places. We urge everyone to exercise caution when strangers offer assistance,” said Hamoonga.
Further updates on the case will be provided as investigations progress.
