GREEN PARTY HOPES FOR A RETURN TO POLITICAL NOMALCY IN 2022

GREEN Party president Peter Sinkamba is hopeful Zambia may return to normalcy politically if there is no escalation of tension through certain actions. In an interview, Mr Sinkamba said 2021 has been a stressful year for most Zambians because there has been a lot of political tension in the country.

He said in the months preceding the August 12 general election, a number of lives were lost from across the political divide.

Mr Sinkamba said the deployment of soldiers to help maintain order and stability prior to the general election was a confirmation of the tension that existed at the time, and could have degenerated into something else had there been no intervention.“I think in 2021, and generally in the last two years, we experienced a lot of political tension in the country,” he said.

Mr Sinkamba said, however, that the country has an opportunity to return to political normalcy, which he said will only happen if those in power do not handle their opponents in a high-handed manner.

He said exercising maximum tolerance and restraint will help quell any form of tension and also prevent certain actions.“From the political side, the tension was just too much and we hope it will be diffused, but you can only diffuse it if those in government do not become high-handed in the manner they handle political opponents, either directly or indirectly, through their political formations.“If we do not escalate tension through some actions, maybe the nation may return to political normalcy in 2022,” Mr Sinkamba said. And Mr Sinkamba anticipates a tough economic year ahead.

He attributed his prediction to the alleged lack of policy direction on key mining companies such as Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines, whose future he said is still uncertain.

Mr Sinkamba also said the removal of subsidies on fuel and electricity is likely to negatively affect citizens, especially low-income earners and the rural population.
