The WhatsApp General Who Won Lura’ s Election
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva staged a historic comeback by winning the October 25, 2026, runoff election with 51.79% of the vote, defeating conservative challenger Flávio Bolsonaro (48.21%).
After losing the first round on October 4 by a 47% to 45% margin, Lula overturned a 2-million-vote deficit through a radical digital campaign overhaul, late-stage popular economic measures, and widespread grassroots mobilization.
Social media guru and digital strategist nicknamed Lula’s WhatsApp “general” André Janones was central to this comeback.
The 42-year-old Brazilian federal congressman and lawyer from Minas Gerais masterminded the massive online mobilization campaign known as “Lula’s Army” (Exército do Lula).
The Strategy
Following Lula’s trailing performance in the first round of the 2026 presidential election, Janones completely shifted the campaign’s digital strategy to rival the formidable social media presence of the Bolsonaro family.
His tactics effectively introduced a form of “electoral gamification” to Brazilian politicsThe Scale: He grew a WhatsApp broadcast channel from roughly 50,000–60,000 followers into an aggressive network of nearly 11 million subscribers in just three weeks.
Daily “Missions”: Janones sent a relentless stream of urgent, all-caps instructions, assigning his “soldiers” specific daily tasks like spreading viral campaign videos, hijacking algorithms, and aggressively pushing pro-Lula hashtags.
