🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Health Ministry Redeploys 123 Officers in Sweeping Headquarters Restructuring
The Ministry of Health has announced the redeployment of 123 officers from its headquarters to their substantive duty stations across Zambia as part of a restructuring exercise aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and restoring compliance with the ministry’s approved staffing structure.
Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi announced the changes on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, explaining that the affected officers had been serving at headquarters under temporary administrative arrangements outside the approved 2021 establishment.
The ministry’s authorised headquarters establishment provides for 403 positions, with the restructuring intended to ensure staffing arrangements correspond to approved posts and operational requirements.
Under the directive, the 123 officers will return to their substantive stations and official pay points, where they are expected to support service delivery and decentralised health administration.
The exercise also includes a review of the academic, professional and technical qualifications of personnel currently occupying positions within the headquarters establishment.
Officers found to be serving in positions for which they do not possess the required qualifications will be reassigned to roles consistent with their verified credentials.
The ministry has presented the exercise as an administrative restructuring rather than a dismissal of the 123 affected officers.
The announcement follows major changes at the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), where Chilengi earlier ordered the separation of employees following findings from a forensic audit examining procurement, warehousing, distribution and medicines accountability.
The two developments mark a wider reorganisation of institutions under the Ministry of Health, with attention now turning to how the changes will affect staffing, medicines management and healthcare delivery across the country.
The ministry has not publicly detailed the distribution of the 123 officers by profession or the specific health facilities and administrative offices to which they will be reassigned.
