HEGSETH ENDS THE FORCED CHOICE: TROOPS CAN NOW BECOME CHAPLAINS WITHOUT LEAVING UNIFORM, PENTAGON PAYS THE SEMINARY BILL
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth just delivered the first win for his new Office of Religious Affairs. Active-duty troops with a bachelor’s degree can now train as chaplains while staying in uniform. Their service branch covers the seminary tuition. They keep their pay, allowances, and benefits. Then they return to the force as chaplains.
For years the system forced a brutal tradeoff. Hegseth put it plainly: “For years, a war fighter who felt called to the chaplaincy had only one option: take off the uniform, pay for seminary yourself, and then hope you can find and fight your way back in. We lost a lot of those great Americans, good warriors who wanted to answer God’s call. But not anymore.”
President Trump’s Department of War is done making service members choose between the uniform and their calling. “Chaplains are the moral backbone of this military,” Hegseth said. The new Chaplain In-Service Procurement Program removes the barrier that drove good warriors out of the ranks. Congress passed the underlying authority with bipartisan support. Republicans and Democrats recognized the value of spiritual readiness for the force.
Hegseth closed with a direct charge to those who feel the call: “To those who feel called to be a chaplain, the Department of War has your back. Be strong and very courageous. Your flock awaits.”
This is a direct correction after years of treating faith as an afterthought. Morale is rising because the military is again treating its moral backbone as essential, not optional. One Nation Under God is no longer just a slogan in the ranks. It is policy.- DTP
