I don’t know where Binwell is, surety tells court
BINWELL Mpundu’s surety, Mulenga Fube has told the Lusaka Magistrates Court that he does not know the whereabouts of the former lawmaker, saying the last time they spoke, Mpundu told him that he had written to the Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba seeking security guarantees.

“The last time I spoke to him, he did not tell me his location but said he wrote some letters to the IG to guarantee his security because he allegedly received threats from State agents,” Fube told the court.

Asked who had threatened Mpundu, Fube responded, “he just said state agents and that his life was in danger.”
This is in a case in which Mpundu is charged with sedition for allegedly publishing an article on his Facebook page in which he incited members of the public to acquire firearms in preparation for self defence.

The former lawmaker is on a bench warrant after repeatedly missing his court appearances.
During proceedings, Magistrate Webster Milumbe asked Fube why he should not pay the K100,000 bail bond or show cause why the money should not be forfeited following Mpundu’s failure to appear in court.
Fube, a 51 year old farmer and former lawmaker, asked for two weeks to mobilise the money, explaining that he was currently in state custody and had no access to his phones.

“As things stand, Your Honour, I have no access to my phones. I’m hoping within that period the bail amount would be mobilised.”
In his ruling, Magistrate Milumbe ordered Fube to pay the K100,000 bond or remain in prison for six months.
“You should choose to pay as and when you have the money so that you can be discharged as a surety,” the magistrate said.
Meanwhile, the second surety, Christopher Kang’ombe has been given until November 23 to appear before court and explain why he should not be held liable for the bond.

Prior to the August 13 general election, Mpundu featured in a video that circulated widely in which he said the Tonse Alliance was prepared to “kill and be killed” during the elections.

Following criticism from government and members of the public over the remarks, Mpundu’s whereabouts became unclear.
