Blanche Puts Media on Notice: Omar Search Was Judge-Approved, Necessary, and Not Election Interference

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche rejected claims that a federal search warrant executed at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. home on October 12 amounted to election interference, stating the action was driven by the requirements of the investigation and approved by a magistrate judge.

Speaking to reporters, Blanche emphasized that search warrants are inherently covert operations and become public only because of the circumstances surrounding their execution. “Well, so we don’t talk about searches. Searches are covert, they’re not overt. And yes, this became overt because of the circumstances around the search on Monday, but that is a covert operation, it’s a search warrant,” he said. He added that applications for warrants require explaining why a search is necessary rather than a subpoena and why it must occur on a particular day. “And as the magistrate judge found, we needed to do it then.”

Blanche directly addressed criticism of the timing relative to the election calendar. “This does not violate the 60-day rule or whatever rule, which is not even a rule, it’s just a practice,” he stated.

He noted that when the Justice Department must execute a search warrant or make an arrest, it evaluates whether the purpose is proper under the Justice Manual, which is what occurred in this case. “And that’s what we did then and that’s what we do in every case.”

The comments marked the second time that day Blanche pushed back against accusations of politicized timing. Earlier, the department announced indictments against Virginia State Sen. Louise Lucas and family members on charges including racketeering, drug trafficking, and money laundering connected to an illegal marijuana operation.

Omar has publicly denied wrongdoing and described the search as political intimidation. Blanche observed that while the congresswoman has made multiple statements, he has limited his own comments to confirming that a law enforcement action took place. The probe itself, according to the department, involves alleged immigration fraud spanning decades.
