In an era when many African leaders spend more time in Western capitals than in their own neighbourhoods, Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso has done the opposite.
Since seizing power in September 2022, the young Pan-African leader has made only five confirmed foreign trips. Three of them stayed on African soil. Only two left the continent and both went to Russia.
This is not isolation. This is priority.
The African Trips
Mali (November 2022) — His very first journey abroad was to Bamako, to lock arms with Assimi Goïta. The foundation of the Alliance of Sahel States was being laid.
Niger (July 2024) — He landed in Niamey for the first AES leaders’ summit, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the leaders of Mali and Niger against ECOWAS pressure and French neo-colonial designs.
Ghana (January 2025) — He walked into Accra for President John Mahama’s inauguration in full military fatigues, pistol at his side, receiving the loudest cheers of the day. A clear signal that Burkina Faso’s revolution will not be confined by old colonial borders.
The Two Journeys Beyond Africa
Both times Traoré left the continent, he went to Moscow:
July 2023 — Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, where he told African leaders to stop acting like “puppets.”
May 2025 — Victory Day celebrations, standing with Vladimir Putin as an honoured guest.
No trips to Paris. No trips to Washington. No trips to London or Brussels. While some African presidents still chase photo-ops in the old colonial capitals, Traoré has made it clear: the future of Burkina Faso and the Sahel will be decided in Bamako, Niamey, Ouagadougou — and with partners who respect African sovereignty.
This is the new Pan-Africanism in action. Less talk, more focus. Less jet-setting for Western validation, more concrete solidarity among African states that refuse to kneel.
Captain Ibrahim Traoré is not running from the world. He is simply refusing to let the world define Africa’s path. And that, comrades, is revolutionary.
