BREAKING: Jon Ossoff just won reelection in Georgia, calling the first major race of the midterms for Democrats
The first big result of Election Night is in, and it belongs to Jon Ossoff.
According to The Hill, Decision Desk HQ has projected that Ossoff will win reelection to the Senate in Georgia, holding off a challenge from Republican Rep. Mike Collins. With 11 percent of precincts reporting, Ossoff was leading with about 80 percent of the vote to Collins’ nearly 20 percent.
The Hill describes it as the first major midterm result of the night.
It matters because of the state. Georgia was one of the few legitimate pickup opportunities for Republicans in the Senate, a state Donald Trump carried in 2024. But The Hill reports Ossoff’s reelection never seemed seriously in doubt. He led in the polls consistently and easily outraised his opponent throughout the campaign.
Ossoff first won his seat in 2020, in a victory that helped hand Democrats a narrow Senate majority. The Hill notes his stock has risen sharply over the past year, and that he has been the subject of growing presidential speculation. He has repeatedly dismissed it, telling voters in a debate last month that he’s running for reelection to the Senate.
For now, the story is simple. Republicans pointed to Georgia as a place to take a Democratic seat. Ossoff held it, early and easily.
It’s the first result of the night, and it’s a win for Democrats in a state Trump carried.
