Kambwili applies for bail pending trial, accuses police of denying him bond

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) member, Chishimba Kambwili has applied in Kasama High Court for bail pending trial after he was allegedly denied police bond by the police.

Dr Kambwili has also stated that because of being denied for long hours, his health has deteriorated and that a sleep easy machine had to be connected to his bed for him to sleep.

According to an affidavit filed in the Kasama High Court, Dr Kambwili said he was detained at Kabwata police station at the instance of the respondent and committed an unspecified offences.

“That on the same June 20th, 2022, I was transported to Kasama central police station at the instance of the respondent. That on the 21st June 2022, at Kasama central police , I was charged with the offence of expressing or showing hatred , ridicule or contempt for persons because of race, tribe or place of origin,” read the affidavit.

Dr Kambwili stated that immediately after being charged, he applied for police bond having being advised by his lawyers which advice he verily believed to be true and correct that the offence he was charged with is bondable and bailable.

“That not withstanding that the offence I am charged with, the respondent (through Zambia Police) denied me bond on the basis that their superiors have not authorized them to grant me bond and now I have remained in their custody at Kasama central police,” read the affidavit.

Dr Kambwili stated that his health has deteriorated as the respondent had to connect a sleep easy machine to the holding cell to facilitate his treatment.

“That my advocates requested the respondent through the criminal investigations officer to furnish them with the date as to when I shall be taken to court, but where told that investigations were ongoing.That I verily believe that I am being unjustifiably and unlawfully detained by the respondent at the said police station as I am supposed to appear before an appropriate competent court within 24 hours,” read the affidavit.
