KCM FATAL ACCIDENTS SADDEN MINE UNIONS
Barely a week after a Konkola Copper Mines employee died in a mine accident, management announced another fatality involving a dump truck driver at the Chingola Open Pit operations at Nchanga mine.
According to the notice, 38 year old Stephen Daka’s body was discovered by a mine investigation team a few metres from the dump truck he had been operating, under circumstances currently under investigation.
In light of the two incidents occurring in quick succession, KCM management has suspended operations in Chingola, Chililabombwe, Nampundwe, and Kitwe to allow for a comprehensive review of safety procedures.
Meanwhile, Mine Unions have called on Konkola Copper Mines Management to prioritize employee safety as they start full operations at the mine.
Mines Workers Union of Zambia -MUZ President Joseph Chewe says KCM should ensure that all safety guidelines are tightened before production resumes at the mine.
