KITWE GIRL DROWNS IN KAFUE RIVER DURING COLD BOX UNIT VIEWING
A day of excitement turned tragic in Kitwe’s Luangwa Township when an eight-year-old girl drowned in the Kafue River while thousands of residents gathered to witness the transit of a Cold Box Unit.
The victim, identified as Agness Bunda from Old Ndeke, was among the many who had gathered at Kafue Bridge, eagerly waiting for the massive industrial load to pass through the town.
According to Zambia Police, Agness and a group of children decided to swim in the river while waiting for the Cold Box Unit.
Copperbelt Commanding Officer Peacwell Mweemba explained that the tragedy occurred when one of Agness’s slippers was swept away by the river’s current.
In an attempt to retrieve it, she was caught by the strong current and swept away.
Despite swift efforts by the police and Kitwe City Council’s fire brigade, Agness’s body has not yet been recovered.
The Cold Box Unit, part of a major industrial operation, had attracted thousands of onlookers from across Kitwe, but the event was overshadowed by the tragic drowning.
