LAWYERS PLEAD NOT GUILTY OF THEFT

LUSAKA lawyer Mutemwa Mutemwa, his son Mutemwa Mutemwa Junior, also a lawyer and police officer Dennis Mano Kayombo have pleaded not guilty to charges of theft of US$800,000.

Mutemwa, State Counsel, Mutemwa Jr and Kayombo appeared before Lusaka chief resident magistrate Dominic Makalicha where they pleaded not guilty.

In count one, Mutemwa Senior and his son are charged with theft.

Allegations are that they jointly stole US$800,000, the property of Lishandu Chinjenge in October 19, 2021.

In count two, detective chief inspector Kayombo, from Lusaka Central Police Station, is charged with theft by public servant.

It is alleged that he stole US$800,000 which came into his possession by virtue of his employment.
After all the accused pleaded not guilty, magistrate Makalicha adjourned the case to November 23, 2021 for commencement of trial.

The Mutemwas are represented by Sakwiba Sikota, Makebi Zulu, Jonas Zimba and Mutakela Lisimba while Kayombo is represented by Lisimba, and Kennedy Kaunda and Anthony Mwila of Kaunda Kaunda Legal Practitioners.

Mukuma Chipawa and Susan Besa are prosecuting the case.

Last month, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga announced the arrest of the trio in connection with the theft of US$800,000 [about K14 million] belonging to Chinjenge of house number 2415 Ibex Hill Lusaka.

The money was stolen from Chinjenge’s other residence in Salama Park.

The money was stolen during a search at Chinjenge’s residence.
