LCC SHOULD HALT THE REMOVAL OF MOBILE MONEY BOOTHS ALONG THE GREAT EAST ROAD

LUSAKA – 02/07/22

Information reaching our desk is that the Lusaka City Council intends to pull down mobile money booths along the Great East Road as part of the Keep Lusaka Clean ahead of the AU mid- term summit slated for later this month.

If this is true the United Party for National Development (UPND) is calling on the Council to immediately rescind its decision which if executed will negatively affect people who depend on those booths for their living.

While it is appreciated that the effort is meant to bring sanity and order along the Great East Road and Lusaka in general, it would be injustice to remove the vendors without consultation and giving them alternatives and as a party,we are opposed to such a move.

We, therefore, advise the Lusaka City Council to take other measures aimed at keeping the City clean during this period.

We as a party further believe that the summit will provide the young people trading in those booths an opportunity to make extra income owing to the influx of people into the City and pulling them down will be an injustice.

The City Council can take this opportunity to paint strategic points around the City in national colours that will depict our tourism potential

We remain committed to the cause of uplifting the standard of living of our people and creating a healthy environment.
