LUSAKA DEPUTY MAYOR CONDEMNS LUSAKA MAYOR’S ACTION LEADING TO HER ATTACK IN OLYMPIA

Lusaka Deputy Mayor, Ms. Ketty Nanyangwe, has criticized the recent incident involving Mayor Chilando Chitangala and her Aide-de-Camp (ADC), calling it a missed opportunity to follow proper procedures in addressing public complaints.

The altercation, sparked by the Mayor’s attempt to address illegal car wash and bar operations, has drawn mixed reactions. While many agreed the businesses were operating unlawfully, critics questioned the Mayor’s handling of the situation.

By seizing a woman’s phone, the Mayor escalated tensions unnecessarily, Ms. Nanyangwe noted, emphasising that law enforcement requires adherence to established procedures such as issuing fines or official notices.

She stressed the importance of city leaders respecting the very by-laws they enforce, warning that failure to do so invites negative public reactions.

The Deputy Mayor described the incident as unfortunate and avoidable, suggesting it stemmed from perceived abuse of authority.

“ This kind of behaviour is unacceptable, “ she said.

She stressed that civil leaders must respect the residents for them to reciprocate with respect.

The Deputy Mayor urged civic leaders to follow procedures and exhibit professionalism in handling complaints so that such confrontations are avoided to protect the image of the Council.

Ms Nanyangwe has also implored Lusaka residents and business owners to engage the Council when setting up structures in the city.

Ms. Nanyangwe’s remarks follow a viral video showing patrons at an Olympia car wash confronting the Mayor and her team with physical and verbal aggression which she condemns.

  1. Truth be told this baMayor behaved like a typical pf cadre unilaterally grabbing phones from people patronizing that car wash when she could’ve followed laid down legal procedure to handle the matter. No shame pfidiots just won’t follow the laws of this country!?

    • You’re completely out of order. The Mayor was carrying out her duties albeit in a disorganized manner. That structure was illegal period. Agree, this lawlessness was birthed and nurtured by the PF but now it’s time to bring sanity. There’s also another PF surrogate who built 150 shop on the Lumumba drainage system and he’s now resisting the demolition, unfortunately for him the bulldozers are already in motion to demolish the structures. Finally, that deputy mayor cannot attack her superior officer in that manner.
