BREAKING: Marco Rubio is preparing to resign from Trump’s cabinet and launch a 2028 presidential bid after the midterm disaster
Three days into the Republican collapse, the first big name may already be heading for the exits.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly preparing to step down from Donald Trump’s cabinet to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. Sources in Washington and the UK government expect him to go after the party’s disastrous midterm results, which cost Republicans both the House and the Senate.
The reason is simple. Insiders say Rubio needs to distance himself from the policies that sank his party, including the war in Iran, to improve his chances against his chief rival, Vice President JD Vance.
And he may not be alone. Up to five cabinet members could leave the administration amid public backlash over energy costs, foreign policy and potential impeachment proceedings by Democrats.
But the timing is hard to ignore. Vance has already broken with Trump on why Republicans lost, saying everyone knows it was the Iran war.
Ron DeSantis called the election a rebuke of Trump. Speaker Mike Johnson is out. Republicans eyeing 2028 are looking for a way to run without Trump’s baggage.
The race to replace Trump has started before Trump’s term is even over.
