Massive Crowds in Brazil Roar “Lula to Prison” as Latin America Turns Right
Independent journalist Nick Shirley captured a massive anti-Lula rally along the Brazilian coast the day before the presidential runoff. Yellow and green flags filled the air as helicopters circled above a sea of supporters for Flavio Bolsonaro.
“Here in Brazil something incredible is happening,” Shirley said on the ground. “Since the US ideas have shut down, every country in Central America and South America has moved forward to the right and left each and every important election.”
The crowd answered with a relentless chant: “Lula, ladrão, seu lugar é na prisão! Lula, ladrão, seu lugar é na prisão!”
Shirley translated the energy for viewers: “Everyone’s chanting, Lula’s going down!” The refrain continued without pause: “Lula, ladrão, seu lugar é na prisão! Lula, ladrão, seu lugar é na prisão!”
“Lula is a robber and he needs to go to the jail,” he added as the sea of flags kept waving.
Flavio Bolsonaro himself addressed the scale of the turnout. “Flavio Bolsonaro, Nicholas Ferreira, these are crowds like I have never, ever, ever seen in my entire life. Look at this. This is incredible.”
