MASSIVE SHOW OF LAWMAKERS AT SAMU LYA MOOMBA SPARKS DEBATE

UPND member Prince Ignatius Hangoma says the attendance of over 40 Members of Parliament accompanying President Hakainde Hichilema at the Samu Lya Moomba traditional ceremony in Chief Choongo’s chiefdom has ignited public discussion on political motives and national unity.

Mr Hangooma notes that while the event in Monze District provided a strong display of the “One Zambia, One Nation”, political commentators and citizens are raising questions regarding the sudden surge in lawmaker attendance.

He says for decades, the historic heritage site where freedom fighters gathered under a tree to plot the struggle for Zambia’s independence saw selective attendance from national leaders. However, this year’s ceremony recorded an unprecedented turnout of MPs, including figures who had previously shown little involvement in the annual event.

Mr Hangoma has cautioned MPs against treating presidential appearances as opportunistic platforms to lobby for cabinet appointments, project personal proximity to the Head of State, or perform loyalty displays as election preparations take shape.

He says the lawmakers need to remain patient, focus on their constituency mandates, and allow executive decisions to proceed without artificial pressure.
