MAYOR-ELECT INSPECTS SIMON MWEWA LANE MARKET
Lusaka Mayor-Elect Mwewa Chitambala has inspected Simon Mwewa Lane Market as the Lusaka City Council begins the first phase of an exercise to re-designate traders operating along the road into designated market spaces.
Chitambala, accompanied by Town Clerk Oliver Muuka and senior council officials, assessed vacant spaces that will accommodate traders currently operating from the corner of Kalusha Bwalya Road through Simon Mwewa Lane to Chibolya Basic Compound.
He said roadside trading had contributed to traffic congestion and created safety risks for both traders and motorists.
“The data of the affected traders will be recorded through the Office of the Market Master before they are re-designated into the market,” Chitambala said.
He explained that the exercise would be implemented in five phases and extended to other parts of the Central Business District and the city.
“This is phase one of the exercise aimed at bringing order and sanity to the trading area,” he said.
Chitambala further said relocated traders would be required to pay market levies electronically once operating from authorised trading spaces.
“This will enhance accountability, transparency, and efficiency in the management and operations of markets,” he said.
He added that the council’s initiative was intended to create safe, orderly and well-managed trading environments.
“We want to bring order and sanity to the trading area,” Chitambala said.
