Meal allowances will return when Bally fixes economy – Government
GOVERNMENT says meal allowances of public university students which were scrapped off by the shelved PF regime will be re-introduced after Bally fixes the economy.
Vice-president Mutale Nalumango made the revelation as she responded to a question from Matero Constituency lawmaker Miles Sampa in parliament this morning.
Nalumango said Government did not want to see University of Zambia students and their Copperbelt University counterparts as well as other learning institutions to drop out of school due to lack of meal allowances.
As higher Education minister, Patriotic Front losing presidential running mate Proffesor Nkandu Luo banned meal allowances for public university students in 2019.
Prof Luo said with effect from 2019, students would be paid tuition and accommodation allowances which would be paid directly to institutions while book and project allowances will be paid direct to students and that pocket money popularly known as BC allowances would not be paid.
During the run up to the August 12 elections, President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND promised to reverse the meal allowance ban when voted into power.
